Picture of little 3 year old playing on cell phone, but it eyes are super wide open and glassy looking. It’s like he is in a trance. Many children are buried in technology, unaware of anything or anyone around them. Many older children will sometimes be engaging in two or three kinds of activities at once. Listening to music, playing a video game and texting all at the same time. Multitasking.
Is this a harmless form of babysitting or is something more sinister happening. Dr Joshua Straub in a recent post entitled “Is technology harmful to my kids” reveals that:
Children ages 12 to 18 spend nearly two hours a day texting alone.
8 to 10 year olds, average almost 8 hours a day.
Those ages 11 to 18 spend more than 11 hours per day.
Dr Straub suggests, “the relational and psychological effects of these numbers on our kids are mind numbing (pun intended):
Our kids are getting dumber
Our kids are becoming more self-centered
Our kids care less about others
The American Academy of Pediatrics (these are the neuroscience researchers studying the brains of our offspring) now suggest our kids (and this includes teenagers) limit screen time to a maximum of two hours a day apart from homework.
What do you think?
We are seriously thinking of making our home a “Tech Free Zone” The greatest problem is that we will have to put down our own computers and phones and actually interact with them! Here is the problem, parents adults are doing the same thing at the same time so there is not any real interaction or relationship building.
Question: Has technology affected your ability to communicate with your children or grandchildren?
On the other hand, “it’s been getting harder for parents to really monitor a lot of what their kids are seeing and doing. At the same time, they’re relying on the seeming benefit of being able to quiet the kid at a restaurant with a device,” he said. “We may be building a bit of a Frankenstein’s monster, because we’re using that power for our benefit, not for the child’s benefit.”
These changing patterns in how children interact with media appear to be a “seismic shift,” said James Steyer, chief executive officer and founder of Common Sense Media, in an email to CNN. “One of the most staggering findings is that mobile devices are now as common in the home as TVs — 98% of households with kids under 8 have a mobile device,” he said. “The ubiquity of mobile is changing childhood.”
In a study that published in the journal Developmental Psychology last month, 3rd through 5th graders (ages 8-11) who had their own TV or video games in their bedrooms spent more time with media. More time spent was associated with a reduced amount of sleep and reading, and that has been tied to lower grades in school. In addition, those with bedroom media were likely to be exposed to more media violence and tended to act more aggressively than children with no bedroom media.
Depression, suicide, anxiety, sleep deprived, violence, social media has made people very unsociable, etc…… are all on the rise.
I remember when I got saved the Christian organization called the TV the one-eyed devil. Through the device we allowed all kinds of things into our home that we did not believe in.
I think they had a valid point, but it way out of balanced. The enemy will never come through the front door in broad daylight. He is sneaky, he is tricky, he is subtle.
I remember when Music was a big issue. Jimmy Hendrix said, “If I can get my music into their heads I can control them.”
The battle is for our mind and then gain access to the heart. I watch war movies and when you are trying to gain access or control you must get the communication headquarters. This is your mind.
That’s why we have to be choosy. We have to control what – or who – we allow into our minds. What’s true of computers is true with humans – garbage in, garbage out.
“Therefore I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies [dedicating all of yourselves, set apart] as a living sacrifice, holy and well-pleasing to God, which is your rational (logical, intelligent) act of worship. And do not be conformed to this world [any longer with its superficial values and customs], but be transformed and progressively changed [as you mature spiritually] by the renewing of your mind [focusing on godly values and ethical attitudes], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His plan and purpose for you].” ROMANS 12:1-2 AMP
Present your bodies, your mind, heart, intellect, feelings, emotions, etc…. a living sacrifice. Do not be conformed to this world. In other words don’t let the worlds way, change us, we must guard against allowing and changing us from God, love, forgiveness, caring, compassion, focus, direction, destiny, spiritual gifts, callings, etc.
Superficial values and customs.
Be transformed and progressively changed as you mature spiritually, by the renewing of your mind FOCUSING ON GODLY VALUES AND ETHICAL ATTITUDES.
What attitudes do we see with many young people. Disrespect, dishonorable, selfish, lazy, no drive, no vision, no goals, just social, fun, etc. These are picked up attitudes. Influenced by something or someone.
INFLUENCE: the capacity to have an effect on the character, development, or behavior of someone or something, or the effect itself.
We have to ask ourselves a really challenging question? What or who is the greatest influencer in your life? What or who now is influencing your children??? The media is influencing our minds. People get so upset over watching TV, news, talk shows. Many of the media outlets we watch and believe are being influenced by someone or something. Political media, my God is so overboard, yet many people get so caught up in what they hear and they just believe it. It the information has now influenced them to believe a certain way. The media has bashed Christian for years, made us out to look crazy and bizarre. The spirit behind this age is to influence the minds of people to go natural (normal) to move away from SPIRITUAL GOD VALUES AND MORALS.
There was a book The Holy War, written by John Bunyan in 1682. The Holy War by King Shaddai Upon Diabolus, to Regain the Metropolis of the World, Or, The Losing and Taking Again of the Town of Mansoul. The Town and huge Castle was called Mansoul. It had gates, the eye, ear, nose, feel, mouth gate. These were the gates the enemy would try and try and try to gain access to Mansoul.
“Set your mind and keep focused habitually on the things above [the heavenly things], not on things that are on the earth [which have only temporal value].” COLOSSIANS 3:2 AMP
“My son, pay attention to my words and be willing to learn; Open your ears to my sayings. Do not let them escape from your sight; Keep them in the center of your heart. For they are life to those who find them, And healing and health to all their flesh. Watch over your heart with all diligence, For from it flow the springs of life.” PROVERBS 4:20-23 AMP
