Take Heart, Trust God

Sermon Notes

There are times we are going to have to face things that are tuff. I mean things that are rough and tuff and could do a lot of damage to our lives. I have been on this journey for a few months. I have been hit with health challenges, life challenges, family challenges, financial challenges, church challenges, challenges most coming at the same times.

I was praying the other day asking God to maybe stagger the challenges, help a brother out.

I had emergency gall bladder surgery, week later a stroke, then the news of a huge increase in our service price with Hilton which moves us out. Searching, submitting offers, places saying they do not want a church. On and on the challenges, the vast amount of money it takes to move, equipment cost.

I started to feel like Sanford on Sanford and son, Ethel I coming home. No, no.

We all will go through things, growth is difficult, change is difficult. As I get older I can see the hand of God on me all the times of my life. Every heartache, every failure, every trial and test I can look back and see that God was there ALWAYS. Say ALWAYS, ALWAYS.

“So David departed from there and escaped to the cave of Adullam; and when his brothers and all his father’s house heard about it, they went down there to him. Everyone who was suffering hardship, and everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented gathered to him; and he became captain over them. There were about four hundred men with him.” 1 SAMUEL 22:1-2 AMP

Let paint the picture. David ran away and was in hiding from King Saul. He was alone living in a cave. He went from the Palace and Kings Daughter, leader of the Army. He was the top leader of all the military leaders. King Sauls right hand man. King Saul gets jealous and begins to try to kill his son n law David. David runs for his life, living in a cave ALL ALONE. HE WENT FROM THE PALACE TO THE GHETTO. He went from the top of life to the bottom.

David went from a young shepherd boy overlooked by his father when Samuel came looking to anoint a boy king. He is looked down when brings food for his brother when they faced Goliath. He faces Goliath and then is promoted by the King to leader of his armies, marries his daughter the King Saul is filled jealousy and David is know running for his life. Hiding in a cave then if that is not bad enough look who shows up. Notice this is all part of the master plan of God.

It is not easy, it is not always fun but it is God. We has human believe we are supposed to live worry, pain, struggle free. No life is filled with challenges and victory and then more challenges.

David went up and then went down and then went up and then went down. He had victories, and he had defeats. The defeats do not define us, they are just times we go thru in order to become who we were created to be.

David was not faith filled when he ran away. The great David was filled with fear. The great David was filled with despair. The great David was filled with doubt. The great David was filled with confusion. The great David was filled with worry. The great David was filled with sorrow. The great David felt abandoned by His God.

Remember what you feel is not the truth, it is just what you feel when you are going thru the storms and challenges.

We have to get this in our heart not when everything is wonderful, but when all hell breaks loose.

“for we walk by faith, not by sight [living our lives in a manner consistent with our confident belief in God’s promises]” 2 CORINTHIANS 5:7 AMP

“We live by what we believe, not by what we can see.” 2 Corinthians 5:7 NCV

“We know it because we believe God. We believe him, and so we obey him. We do not live by the things that we can see.” 2 Corinthians 5:7 EASY

We loose our head and heart when we forget this word. Our life is a life lived by faith. Not by what we see in the natural. This is what David did and ran away. Living in a cave instead of the palace. Notice God has another plan. God makes multiple plans for us.

Nothing catches God by surprise. God knows everything we will go thru. God knows all of the stuff we will face and He knows you will make the right choices eventually. God knew David would choose fear for a bit. God knew David would complain, write psalms about how he felt God left him.

God knows before during and after how you will react or respond to life’s situations.

David starts out from the pasture taking care of sheep. Kills Goliath and now is elevated to leader of armies, marries Kings daughter, powerful and the second in command. He has it all. From nothing to something. Kings wants to kill him so he runs away from it all. He is broke, lonely, afraid, messed up in his head.

Then 400 of his kin and people he knew shows up busted and disgusted.

God would not let Him stay having a pity party in the cave alone. So God sends 400 people just like him to join him. He can’t stay that way. God will cause things to happen in the middle of your greatest challenges to get you off of you and seeing and helping others.

God knows one of the best remedies for depression, pain, heartache, is to get outside of you and help others. David becomes their leader. He was like their mini king. God set up a mini plan to prepare David for his future.

Everything you went thru, going thru, and one day go in the near future you will go thru is all for your preparation for what God has for you.

It was so unfair, why would God allow all that hurt and trouble to one of his children?

David leads them and they are doing fairly well. He is back up, feeling great. People are growing they are conquering territories. They are on one of their raids and when they get back to Ziglag their homes were raided. All of their wives, children were taken as slaves and all that own is gone.

David is back down again. Down but not out. David learned something the second go round.

With every trial and test we are to learn and grow up. Learn and grow stronger. Learn and grow our faith and trust and dependence upon God.

“Further, David was greatly distressed because the people spoke of stoning him, for all of them were embittered, each man for his sons and daughters. But David felt strengthened and encouraged in the LORD his God.” 1 SAMUEL 30:6 AMP

“And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God.” 1 Samuel 30:6 KJV

David struggled and failed enough to learn to run to God now. David unlike the past he did not rehearse his pain, problem, fears. No this time he had grown in his faith, he began to encourage himself in the Lord His God.

How do you encourage yourself in your God. Discourage comes when you talk about the pain, problems, hurts, betrayal, over and over. You become discouraged. Discourage is absence of courage. When you speak what God says, courage comes. You will either take heart or take offense. You will take heart or take discouraged.

When we begin to speak, think, and expect only what God says.

“Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord.” Psalms 31:24 NIV

“Be strong and let your hearts take courage, All you who wait for and confidently expect the LORD.” PSALMS 31:24 AMP

“Be strong, be courageous, all you that hope in the LORD.” Psalms 31:24 GNB

“All you who put your hope in the LORD be strong and brave.” Psalms 31:24 NCV

“Everyone that hopes in the Lord: be strong and be brave in your heart.” Psalms 31:24 EASY
