STRENGTHENING YOUR FAITH: Part 4

Sermon Notes:

1 Thessalonians 5:23 KJV. “And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

1 Thessalonians 5:23 NCV. “Now may God himself, the God of peace, make you pure, belonging only to him. May your whole self—spirit, soul, and body—be kept safe and without fault when our Lord Jesus Christ comes.”

In this Word it shows that we as human are 3 parts. We are Spirit, Soul, and Body.

1. OUR BODIES:

We all know our body is what the Bible calls the Temple of the Holy Spirit. Our body houses the spirit of God. Remember when God made man. He formed man out of the dirt, which became our body. This is why when we die our flesh will return back to the dirt.

1 Corinthians 6:19 AMP. “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is within you, whom you have [received as a gift] from God, and that you are not your own [property]?

  1. Body is the temple of Holy Spirit.

  2. Holy Spirit is within you.

  3. Holy Spirit is a gift received from God.

  4. You are not your own property

YOU DO NOT BELONG TO YOURSELVES.

THINK ABOUT THIS. IF I OWN SOMETHING AND SOMEONE ELSE WANTS TO USE WHAT BELONGS TO ME, THEY MUST GET PERMISSION.

WHY DO WE LIVE AND ACT LIKE WE OWN OUR LIVES? YET WE SHOULD BE ASKING GOD WHAT WE SHOULD DO WITH OUR SELVES.

I am so convicted here when I think that I do not treat this body like Jesus own me. I have abused my body. I have neglected my body. I have done many harmful things to my body.

I take better care of my car than I do my body. God is putting this question to us to see and look at our bodies and Temple of the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 6:20 AMP. You were bought with a price [you were actually purchased with the precious blood of Jesus and made His own]. So then, honor and glorify God with your body.”

  1. You were bought with a price.

  2. What was the price? Blood of Jesus.

  3. We were made His own. He owns us.

  4. Honor God with my body.

  5. Glorify God with my body.

When I read this what I have to receive is this, “I BELONG TO GOD, ALL OF ME.” GOD PAID A PRICELESS SO VALUABLE JESUS FOR YOU AND I.

WHAT DOES THAT SAY ABOUT YOU? GOD SO LOVED US THAT HE PAID HIS SON FOR US. WE ARE SO VALUABLE AND PRECIOUS TO GOD.

IF YOU REALLY UNDERSTAND THIS AND GET THIS WORD INSIDE OF YOUR SPIRIT WE WOULD BETTER TREAT OUR BODIES BETTER FOR GOD’S SAKE.

WHEN YOU LET SOMEONE USE SOMETHING AND THEY BRING IT BACK ALL BROKEN AND DIRTY WHAT DO THINK ABOUT THEM?

WE BELONG TO GOD AND HOW ARE WE TAKING CARE OF HIS BODY US?

2. OUR SOUL:

Our soul perceives things in the psychological realm. In fact, in Greek, the original language of the New Testament, the word for soul is psuche, which is also the root word of psychology.

Our soul is our personality, who we are. With our soul we think, reason, consider, remember, and wonder. We experience emotions like happiness, love, sorrow, anger, relief, and compassion. And we’re able to resolve, choose, and make decisions.

YOUR SOUL HAS THREE PARTS: MIND, WILL, AND EMOTIONS.

Matthew 16:26 AMP. “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world [wealth, fame, success], but forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?”

Profit means: a valuable return, to get an advantage or benefit from something.

Forfeits means: to lose or lose the right to by some default, failure, or neglect of obligation or duty or by some offense.

This Word is not saying wealth, fame and success is not God or good. It is saying you don’t sacrifice your Soul (mind, will, emotions) for those things. They will never be of the same value as God/Salvation.

A. Mind: Knowledge is apart of the mind which is apart of your soul. Knowledge and Wisdom are many times working together with Knowledge again which are apart of our soul.

The mind remembers and knows and considers things. This is part of your soul.

Proverbs 2:10 AMP. “For [skillful and godly] wisdom will enter your heart And knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.”

B. Will: mental powers manifested as wishing, choosing, desiring, or intending, the power of control over one's own actions or emotions, a firm desire or determination. Your soul makes your decisions.

C. Emotions: a strong feeling (such as love, anger, joy, hate, or fear), often accompanied by a physical reaction. Emotional we can all understand this term.

Emotions can be positive and take you great levels of passions or supper lows of depression and anger or hate. Remember the song, “Feelings.”

“Beloved, I pray that in every way you may succeed and prosper and be in good health [physically], just as [I know] your soul prospers [spiritually].”

3. OUR SPIRIT:

One of the most important truths to walking out what God desires for us is an area that is not talked about often enough, but is in fact a must for believers if they want to mature and no longer be ruled by their old fleshly nature. Man is a three part being. Man is a spirit who posses a soul and lives in a body. We are not a soul nor are we a body, we are a spirit being. Most of the time when we refer to ourselves in the first person we are referring to our soul or our body. Once born again our spirit man becomes brand new, recreated in the very image and likeness of God. If you want to mature as a believer you must learn to develop who you really are, your spirit man.

Man has learned how to develop the body through exercise and diet. Man has learned how to develop the soul through study and education, but the one area we have had little understanding in is how to develop our spirit man. Paul addressing the Corinthian church reveals that they were still fleshly, carnal, nonspiritual Christians. They were still being dominated by their carnal nature. Because of this he could not speak to them as to spiritual men and women of God, which simply refers to being dominated by their spirit man within. The more we develop our spirit man, the less carnal and immature we will be. One who is spiritual is also tuned in to the Spirit of God within them, following God’s leading for their life.

Just as it takes discipline to develop the body and the mind, there are also spiritual disciplines necessary to develop our spirit man.

A. BECOME SPIRIT CONSCIOUS: The first key to developing your spirit man is to become spirit conscious. We must renew our minds through the Word of God to do so. To renew your mind to become more spirit conscious you need to find scriptures that reveal the real you, your spirit man within. As you do you will begin to see a whole new picture of who you really are.

One such scripture can be found in 2 Corinthians 5:17 where the Holy Spirit through the apostle Paul declares that anyone who is in Christ is a new creation, old things have passed away and all things have become new. The words for new creation actually refer to something that did not previously exist. When you become born again, in that instant you put your faith in Christ, there is a supernatural event that takes place within. God replaces your old spirit man with a brand new spirit.

This brand new spirit that comes into existence when one is saved is one spirit with the Lord. A born again spirit is one that has been recreated in the very image and likeness of God. The spirit man you used to be is no longer there. You become completely brand new on the inside. God’s very DNA now resides in your spirit man. You are instantly changed and now have all of the fruit of this new born again spirit within you. Love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control are now residing in your new spirit man. If we develop our spirit man and become spirit ruled, these fruits will begin to manifest through our lives.

B. PRAY IN SPIRIT: 1 Corinthians 14:14 AMP. “For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unproductive [because it does not understand what my spirit is praying].”

C. WALK IN LOVE:

Ephesians 5:1-2 AMP. “Therefore become imitators of God [copy Him and follow His example], as well-beloved children [imitate their father]; and walk continually in love [that is, value one another—practice empathy and compassion, unselfishly seeking the best for others], just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and sacrifice to God [slain for you, so that it became] a sweet fragrance.”
