One of the biggest misconceptions of Christianity is that once you become a believer everything just becomes great. The Bible talks about believers who receive the seed of salvation but then trials happen and they become discouraged and give up and quit. So many cry out to God to save them, help them, then something happens and they go back to their original way of thinking.
Or we have many who love God, go to church, doing everything they know to do right and yet everyday is such a huge struggle.
I see just as many struggles in believers as we do non believers.
I have seen people love God do ministry and yet over time loose it all and go backwards in their life and live as if they never knew God. Couples who were in love and serving God become defeated and discouraged and quit.
To see people with so much talent and see their potential and yet because of the way they think and believe they sabotage their success.
The battles we face are in our mind and thoughts before they are acted upon outside of us in our actions and behavior.
“Therefore I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies [dedicating all of yourselves, set apart] as a living sacrifice, holy and well-pleasing to God, which is your rational (logical, intelligent) act of worship.” ROMANS 12:1 AMP
“So then, my friends, because of God’s great mercy to us I appeal to you: Offer yourselves as a living sacrifice to God, dedicated to his service and pleasing to him. This is the true worship that you should offer.” Romans 12:1 GNT
Before we get into the renewing of the mind we must understand you will never renew the mind by just trying to change your mind. It’s like you can’t change habits by just trying to change habits. Before we attempt to change our thinking and beliefs God gives us the starting point.
Coming to church will not fix you by itself. Just reading the Bible will not fix and change you by itself. Prayer alone will not change you. Many people pray and still do not listen to God or change. They feel better because they pray, this is religious training on becoming a good person. I know many good people who struggle a lot with their thoughts and beliefs.
We can not just decide to change our thoughts and beliefs by just trying to change them. The first of the year every year millions of people make New Years resolutions. They get fired up to get healthy or decide to do something that is not a habit. What happens they get the thought, the thinking says yes but over some time the beliefs takes over.
Our journey begins first with dedicating all of you. Your whole self to God. Here is the challenge. We try to change our thinking and beliefs without God. To change your mind you must first dedicate your life first.
There really can be no real mind renewal till we give us to Him. I am talking about Gods Mind Renewal, not secular. They will give you all kinds of books on change and altering your thoughts. Because we are Spirit, we must do this Gods Way, not the worlds way. Not the human way but the Lords Way.
When you receive Christ as Your Savior you receive His love, forgiveness, and His salvation. You receive His Spirit. His Spirit becomes energized within you. The mind must be renewed everyday. Your Spirit is instantly saved but your soul which is your thinking, chooser or will and feelings or emotions must be saved everyday. Everything is linked to our thinking. Until you truly give you, all of you to God you won’t go thru the processes to change your beliefs and thinking. I have read human physiology say you can change your life by making something a habit. It takes 21 days you do something and it will become a habit. Not true, because if the deep seated belief is not truly changed you will go back to your original thinking or mindsets. Mind sets are the way we think about everything, which is our beliefs.
“For as he thinks in his heart, so is he [in behavior–one who manipulates]. He says to you, “Eat and drink,” Yet his heart is not with you [but it is begrudging the cost].” PROVERBS 23:7 AMP
As he thinks in his souls, so is he. As he thinks within himself so is he.
You can think something, want to change or be better. Ok, you decide I am going to be more patient, it’s your thoughts, but your actions and behavior show you are not a very patient person. What happens is you are patient for about a week and something happens and your not as in control of your thoughts and bam, belief takes over and you are yelling and shouting like the normal you.
Beliefs of the heart create our quality of life. Not really your past or your education level or failures. Your beliefs. Many things can help to shape or warp our beliefs and thinking. We can go up and down in our beliefs but we usually come back down to the level of our beliefs. Your ability to rise or fail comes from your beliefs. Our beliefs are like a thermostat. They monitor our lives just like a thermostat monitors the temperature. Like the other night I was cooking and the oven was in so I turned in the a/c set it after it cooled down to 75. Last night I get home about 6pm and the a/c kicks on and I am feeling cold air. I did not have to turn it on. It was set from the other night.
We have many beliefs that have been set. Some as children, most before we were 8. Some as teens and adult years we see many beliefs are set. Beliefs about life, God, relationships, church, giving, work, sacrifice, relaxation, entertainment, money, business, on and on and on we could keep going. Beliefs, they will act just like a thermostat and keep heating you up or cooling you off just depends how and what your set on.
See this, we can move a little up and a little down but we always come back to our core beliefs or the current settings. Imagine this, invisible boundaries all around us our life, family, health, relationships, money, wealth, success, happiness, peace etc. are not really out here. They are in here, inside you and your beliefs. People who have trust issues, self esteem issues, confidence issues, all these are controlled by our beliefs.
Nothing really changes until we learn to reset the thermostat of our heart’s belief.
Beliefs are different from thoughts. Thoughts are short term. Thoughts occur because of what we choose to think about. Thoughts have the ability to create Emotions. Emotions are also short term. They tend to last as long as we have our thoughts focused or until we focus on a new thought. This is why positive thinking fails to bring LONG LASTING CHANGE for most people. It only works as long as we can control out thoughts. You will be positive and slip back into negative when not thinking or in control of your thinking.
Beliefs are quit different. Beliefs are long term. Beliefs generate our prevailing, subconscious thoughts that emerge effortlessly to direct and control our lives. Intellectual thoughts create short term emotions. Beliefs give rise to long term feelings. Feelings are abiding. They are a reflection of our sense of self. Our subconscious thoughts and long term feelings require no effort; they simply emerge when we are not consciously focused.
This is where most of the battles and stress comes from. The conflict between what we say we want verses our subconscious taking over. It the person who keeps saying how he or she wants so bad to change or get this or do that intellectual desire, but keeps ending up at the same place we do not want to be. Because with beliefs we do not need to think anymore. They are just running out lives and we cannot figure why we keep living in the way, acting the same way, struggling in the same areas, like we are stuck in this place or rut. We are living in BELIEF AUTO PILOT. Once it is set it just runs that way till a new setting is inputed.
If your belief in whatever area is not changed you will keep coming back to the same place. When we sold our house and moved, I would get on the 51 and without thinking for months would drive right up to my old house.
Our beliefs about what we are and what we can be precisely determine what we will be. “Anthony Robbins
“And do not be conformed to this world [any longer with its superficial values and customs], but be transformed and progressively changed [as you mature spiritually] by the renewing of your mind [focusing on godly values and ethical attitudes], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His plan and purpose for you].” ROMANS 12:2 AMP
