Sermon Notes:

“DEFEATING DISCOURAGEMENT”

I can totally relate to this topic. Ever since I slipped on ice going into the Safeway and twisting and messing my back up it has been a challenge. I have been in pain in every day since. The doctor visits, X-rays, Cat Scans, MRI, physical therapy, of yes the lumbar back brace.

I had to buy an electric recliner for my bedroom to sit and release the pressure off my back. The pain pills, spasm pills, oh Lord. I have struggled to sleep so the Dr ordered me these super-powerful sleeping pills. When I take them I have about an hour to get upstairs or I look, act, feel, and operating like I am totally wasted drunk.

DEFEATING DISCOURAGEMENT IS SUPER REAL TO ME.

Discouragement means a loss of confidence or enthusiasm; to deprive of confidence, hope, or spirit; disheartened.

So many people are struggling with discouragement this past year due to COVID-19 and everything that comes with it. The isolation, the restrictions, the limitations, the frustrations, on and on we could go.

I remember so discouraged because we struggled to find toilet paper and flushable wipes.

I was so discouraged I bought what I could get, but not what I wanted. I have one-ply toilet paper, like who uses that? I have a whole case.

The mask, the hand sanitizers, oh my God, and the fear people show. Remember no church, no larger gatherings, 6 feet apart.

I am so just tired of it all. I have been fighting discouragement. This is the word God gave me to help get me through.

“Trust in and rely confidently on the LORD with all your heart And do not rely on your own insight or understanding. In all your ways know and acknowledge and recognize Him, And He will make your paths straight and smooth [removing obstacles that block your way].”

Proverbs 3:5-6 AMP

“Trust the LORD with all your heart, and don’t depend on your own understanding. Remember the LORD in all you do, and he will give you success.”

Proverbs 3:5-6 NCV

We all go thru times of discouragement and I have this past year 2020 into 2021 have had more than my share of discouragement. When we are going thru discouragement or disappointments or trials or just waiting is can be so stressful on you. I know for me it is. People think that nothing gets to me, not true. I just don’t show it. I have to find God's Solutions to my problems.

4 Causes of Discouragement.

#1 CAUSE IS FATIGUE: When you physically, emotionally, and spiritually exhausted, you are a prime candidate for discouragement. Many times we walk around saying the same thing over and over, “I am so tired.” Really we are not tired unless you did not get 6-8 hours of sleep then you can say your tired.

Most of the time when we say we are tired really we are saying I am physically, emotionally, or spiritually exhausted. Most of us are not dealing with physical exhaustion. We are on the other hand probably emotionally and spiritually exhausted or drained or we could say empty.

This word Says Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Here is the problem or the foundation of discouragement.

DO NOT RELY ON YOUR OWN INSIGHT OR UNDERSTANDING. WE ARE WORN OUT TRYING TO THINK, FIGURE IT OUT. COME ON, WHY GOD, WHY.

NEGATIVE, FEARFUL, THOUGHTS WILL MAKE YOU SICK IN THE HEAD AND SICK IN YOUR BODY. FATIGUE BEGINS TO AFFECT OUR SLEEP, HEALTH, ATTITUDES.

FATIGUE MAKES YOU IMPATIENT, SHORT, GRUMPY, MEAN, AND LONELY CAUSE NO ONE WANTS TO BE AROUND SOMEONE LIKE THAT.

#2 CAUSE IS FRUSTRATION: Frustration means a feeling of anger or annoyance caused by being unable to do something: the state of being frustrated: something that causes feelings of anger and annoyance: the fact of being prevented from succeeding or doing something.

Joyce Meyers said, “Frustration is a sign I am acting independently. The more you try your own way, the tighter the doors will stay closed.”

Frustration is when we get so into ourselves and we operate our lives from this POSITION.

“Trust the LORD with all your heart, and don’t depend on your own understanding.”

Proverbs 3:5 NCV

Frustration is produced when you are in you and doing life from you, not God. Flesh, not faith.

#3 CAUSE IS FAILURE: I heard a quote, “just when you're about to make ends meet someone moves the end.” Failure is tough for anyone. We all fail and fall short. How do you deal with it? Somethings you have the power to change so change them. Other things that are out of your control let them go and TRUST IN THE LORD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, NOT LEANING ON YOUR INSIGHT OR YOUR OWN UNDERSTANDING.

#4 CAUSE IS FEAR: Fear is usually behind or the beginning of most of our discouragement.

Fear of failure. Fear of criticism. Fear of acceptance. Fear of responsibility. Remember the Acronym for FEAR. FALSE-EVIDENCE-APPEARING-REAL. WE ALL FACE FEAR. WE ALL GET AFRAID AT TIMES. FEAR WILL STOP YOU. FEAR CAN CAUSE YOU TO ABORT YOUR DESTINY.

No power so effectually robs the mind of all its powers of acting and reasoning as fear.”― Edmund Burke

“Fear defeats more people than any other one thing in the world.”― Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Fear is an insidious and deadly thing. It can warp judgment, freeze reflexes, breed mistakes. Worse, it’s contagious.”― Jimmy Stewart

Fear doesn’t exist anywhere except in the mind. Dale Carnegie

Your fears are a kind of prison that confines you within a limited range of action. The less you fear, the more power you will have and the more fully you will live. Robert Greene

FOUR CURES OF DISCOURAGEMENT

#1 CURE IS REST: The rest I am talking about is not a 4-week vacation. You get away and still not get any rest. Rest has nothing to do with what you have, where you at.

The rest that cures discouragement is from God. Rest in your head, spirit, and body. Rest is PEACE. SO WHAT IS PEACE?

PEACE: Biblical peace is more than just the absence of conflict or a state of rest. It means completeness or wholeness, and it points to the presence of something else. NOTICE THE WORD PRESENCE. THE PRESENCE IS THE PRESENCE OF GOD AND HIS SPIRIT. It means to be complete" or "to be sound or whole.”

Our world can not find peace because they look in the wrong place for it. It is only found in His Presence.

“You will keep in perfect and constant peace the one whose mind is steadfast [that is, committed and focused on You—in both inclination and character] Because he trusts and takes refuge in You [with hope and confident expectation].”

Isaiah 26:3 AMP

REST- PEACE STARTS IN THE MIND. WHAT ARE YOU FOCUSED ON? HERE IS THE TRUST WORD AGAIN.

#2 CURE IS REORGANIZE YOUR LIFE: Discouragement is so real when our life is out of order. When I put everything ahead of God, life, work, family, finances, me whatever things so out wack.

Priority means putting first things first. God first and everything else should be prioritized by your relationship with God.

When I put myself first, things get really messed up. Look at your office or desk or closet when it is all messed up. It creates a negative in your mind, life, and spirit.

#3 CURE IS REMEMBER GOD WILL HELP YOU: We become discouraged when we feel we have the huge load we must carry. God never meant nor created you to carry heavy burdens.

“casting all your cares [all your anxieties, all your worries, and all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares about you [with deepest affection, and watches over you very carefully].”

1 Peter 5:7 AMP

#4 RESIST THE DISCOURAGEMENT. WHAT YOU DON’T RESIST YOU ALLOW TO PERSIST.

Speak to your feeling. Tell them you can’t lead me or control me.

“Be sober [well balanced and self-disciplined], be alert and cautious at all times. That enemy of yours, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion [fiercely hungry], seeking someone to devour.”

1 Peter 5:8 AMP

“But resist him, be firm in your faith [against his attack—rooted, established, immovable], knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being experienced by your brothers and sisters throughout the world. [You do not suffer alone.]”

1 Peter 5:9 AMP
