Billy Graham said, “A good father is one of the most unsung, upraised, unnoticed, and yet one of the most valuable assets in our society.
Charles Spurgeon, “Train up a child in the way he should go—but be sure you go that way yourself."
Dawn Walker, "The Daddy Gap, "Unfortunately, we have an enemy who knows that if he can take out the leader, he can weaken, cripple and scatter those in his wake."
Unknown: God is the father who is always home.
I love Father’s Day. I see so many women who have to stand in both places. They say one of the reasons there is so much craziness going on in our world is the lack of fathers. You rarely hear about a woman leaving her children. It does happen but mostly it’s the men who are gone and missing.
Yvonne and I have been doing a marriage study put out by Jentezen Franklin called, “And then we were one.” There is companion guide that goes with it called, “Seven weeks to a new marriage.”
Pastor Yvonne volunteered us to teach a pastor and his wife who were have marriage struggles. Yes, pastors are real people and we all have struggles.
In doing this we have to read scriptures everyday as a couple and talk about it. Share what we got out of it and write it down.
The first chapter hit me hard because he wrote that a man’s role in the home is three fold. The man is to be the Priest, the Prophet, and the King. He goes into deep detail of what that means.
Many, many men are not the spiritual leaders in their home, the women are. So even a good Christian home is not operating the way God created it to be.
I realize that as a man it was so much easier to just let my wife raise our kids and be the spiritual leader. It did not work because it was not God’s way.
A. Priests would represent the family before God. As the father i am to go before God for my family. A father is to lead, protect, and provide. This is not just a paycheck and home. This is be spiritual leader, spiritual protector, and spiritual provider.
When Israelites were in slaved in Egypt and the death angel came. Moses gave instructions for the Fathers to put the blood above the door post. So we are today to put the blood of Jesus around our families. As a priest i represent my family to God in prayer and intercession as the priest.
B. Prophets in our home means that I am present with God and hear from Him for every situation we encounter. Then its my job to speak to my family about what I heard God say.
C. Kings means the father leads the family on behalf of God. King and Queen rule together and lead together.
Can you see there is a need for God’s men to rise up and help this generation.
2 Corinthians 6:18 AMP “And I will be a Father to you, And you will be My sons and daughters,” Says the Lord Almighty.”
God gives us the greatest example on fatherhood. GOD SAYS I WILL BE A FATHER TO YOU AND YOU WILL BE MY SONS AND DAUGHTERS.
1. THE GIFT OF TIME:
The greatest gift you can give Fathers to your children is you, love and time. God is always present and around our lives. He is always wanting to be involved and apart of lives and growth.
I read of a story about a young boy around the age of 7. His dad came home one night and was short tempered and tired. His son asked his dad if he could ask him a question. Well the dad was really not in to it but said go ahead and ask the question. The son asked, “dad who much do you make an hour?” This really made the dad mad and he got so upset at the question. He kinda cooled down and said, “I make 20 dollars an hour.”
The son put his head down and looked up at his dad and said, “dad can I have 10 dollars?” This mad the dad so mad he yelled at his son. You only wanted to know this to ask me for money. On and on he went on. He yelled at his son and told him to go to room and not come out.
The father cooled a bit again and went up to his little sons room and said, “here son, here is 10 dollars.” The little boy got so excited he pulled out from under his pillow a pile of crumpled dollar bills. The dad got so short tempered got so angry and started yelling at his son, “you already had some money and you did all this to get more?” Dad is really up set.
Dad said, “why son did you ask for the money?” The little boy said, “well dad you said you get paid 20 dollars an hour, i just wanted to buy an hour of your time to spend with me.”
Children need your time fathers. Spend time with your sons teaching them how to be a man of God. Spend time with your daughters dating them showing them what a real man of God is. Show them all by loving your wife.
God has blueprints for family’s and we has fathers just need to read and follow His Words.
I remember my children one day wanting to know my secretaries name and number. The wanted to call and set up an appointment to meet with me. Wow that hit me hard. Open my eyes.
God is calling me to rise up and be Godly Fathers. Not perfect fathers, but men who are willing to follow Jesus and learn and grow and become spiritual. To lead by the giving of ourselves to Jesus and our families. To lead and give of our time to our families. To love like Jesus does to our family.
2. THE GIFT OF LOVE:
Luke 15:19-21 AMP “I am no longer worthy to be called your son; [just] treat me like one of your hired men.” So he got up and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was moved with compassion for him, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.”
We all know this story, the story of the prodigal son.
PRODIGAL MEANS: implies reckless or wasteful lavishness spending to lead to early exhaustion of resources. Broke, busted and disgusted. The son did not listen to his fathers instructions.
God loves us so much He lets us go out and live any way we want. This is why many people are so unhappy. They are make lives that create just like the prodigal. They are spending and waiting their lives living broke and broken. Jesus still loves and cares for all of us.
This is a love that is unconditional. His love is waiting for us all.
The son realizes his error and feels so unworthy. I remember feeling so unworthy to come back to God. The Father is waiting, watching, hoping, looking for his sons return. The son figures to come back home and just be a slave. Once your a son always a son. See the fathers heart.
We must have a heart like Jesus. This heart loves so he forgives. Because he forgives he can give and celebrate the return of his son.
The Father did not even talk about his son’s error. The Father did not even answer his son’s request to be a slave and that he is not worthy to be a son. You can see the power of the Father’s heart and love in this story.
The love of the Father wants to just celebrate the fact that the lost son has returned. No mention of the waisted inheritance.
General Douglas MacArthur said, “By profession I am a soldier and take great pride in that fact, but I am also prouder, infinitely prouder, to be a father. A soldier destroys in order to build; the father only builds, never destroys.”
3. THE GIFT OF YOU:
I realize after so many years and many trials and errors of fatherhood, I have found out children just want their fathers. Any man can father a child but a dad that is another thing. A man can not give himself to his family till he has surrendered himself to the Lord God.
We live in a very selfish world and we are born with a selfish nature at birth. No one has to teach us this. Watch two children and one toy. They will fight over it saying the first words called mine, mine, mine.
There are so many things we have to today to replace relationships. Nothing replaces a relationship but we have phones, internet, tv, entertainment that try to steal our special time.
I realize that time goes by so fast. One day they will be grown. Remember the song, “Cats in the cradle.” I am going to be just like you dad. Dad was to busy to spend time with son. When he got older he wanted time but the son was just him. My son has grown up just like me, yea, just like me.”
“The Lord your God who goes before you will fight for you Himself, just as He did for you in Egypt before your [very] eyes, and in the wilderness where you saw how the Lord your God carried and protected you, just as a man carries his son, all along the way which you traveled until you arrived at this place.’”
