Generosity Verses Greed

Sermon Notes

Greed says “I want and I need.” Generosity says “I trust God and I believe God.” Greed takes, and generosity gives. Greed is “self” focused. True generosity is “God” focused. Greed is an animal fleshy instinct and generosity is a fruit of the Spirit.

A highly successful businessman was once asked to make a substantial donation toward an urgent charity appeal. The businessman listened to the case presented then said, “I can understand why you approached me. Yes I do have a lot of money, and yours is an important cause. But are you aware that I have a lot of calls upon my money? Did you know my mother needs 24 hour nursing care?”

“No we didn’t” came the reply.

“Did you know my sister is struggling to raise a family of eight on her own?”

“No we didn’t” came the reply.

“Did you know I have one son in a drug rehab clinic and another doing voluntary work overseas?”

“No we didn’t.”

“Well, if I don’t give them a cent, what makes you think I’ll give it to you?!” Generosity starts after tithing.

Billy Graham, in his sermon “Partners with God,” says: “One of the greatest sins in America today is the fact that we are robbing God of that which rightfully belongs to Him. When we don’t tithe, we shirk a just debt. Actually we are not giving when we give God one-tenth, for it belongs to Him already (Levt. 27:30). This is a debt we owe. Not until we have given a tenth do we actually begin making an offering to the Lord!”

Generosity starts after tithing.

Someone says that tithing is only for the rich. But we have never heard of a rich man or woman commencing tithing, but can name scores who began to tithe when they were poor and became rich: Mr. Crowell founder of Quaker Oats. Mr. Colgate Colgate soap. Mr. Procter of Ivory Soak. Mr. JL Kraft of Kraft Cheese. Mr. Welch of Welches Grape Juice. Mr. Penny of JC Penny. On and on we could go.

“There is the one who [generously] scatters [abroad], and yet increases all the more; And there is the one who withholds what is justly due, but it results only in want and poverty. The generous man [is a source of blessing and] shall be prosperous and enriched, And he who waters will himself be watered [reaping the generosity he has sown].” PROVERBS 11:24-25 AMP

“One person spends freely and yet grows richer, while another holds back what he owes and yet grows poorer. A generous person will be made rich, and whoever satisfies others will himself be satisfied.” Proverbs 11:24-25 GW

“The world of the generous gets larger and larger; the world of the stingy gets smaller and smaller. The one who blesses others is abundantly blessed; those who help others are helped.” Proverbs 11:24-25 MSG

Generous means freely giving or sharing money and other valuable things : providing more than the amount that is needed or normal : abundant or ample: showing kindness and concern for others.

A Generous person really comes from someone who has a God heart. Generosity comes from within. The Bible says Give and it shall be given unto you. The first step to receiving from God is you have to first Give. We want to wait till God gives then we will give.

Generosity starts with a heart and life that has been surrendered to God. You will never give like this until you really trust God.

Generosity brings Increase. Greed on the other hand will hold back when they should be giving. The reason why tithing is so important to God is it is a test. He says in Malachi test me and see if i wont open up the windows of Heaven. When a person gets saved and excepts Christ as their Savior you step into a new realm. God realm. In the natural realm its all about greed, selfish, greedy, stingy. Until we grow in our faith and trust in God we can’t grow beyond our giving and generosity.

There was a story Jesus and His disciples were hanging out by the offering box. The rich were putting in their gifts then he seen a poor widow put in two mites. Jesus said the rich gave out of their abundance, she gave out of her poverty and put in all she had to live on. Her giving and generosity was from a place of sacrificial heart. This shows me how God gets so excited about our giving.

It’s like the mom who gave her little boy two quarters. She told him one was for God and the other was for ice cream cone after church. The little guy was walking to church and he had a coin in each hand. He tripped and dropped one of his coins and he tried to catch it but it fell into the drain. He said as the coin went down the drain hole, Awe there goes Gods Quarter.

Greed will come to want and poverty. Greed says i can’t give, I don’t have enough, Greed is married to fear and selfishness. Greed says I trust myself and my money and my stuff. The Generous man is a source of blessings. Greed + Fear + Selfish = Poverty, Want, Lack, Poorer. Generosity + Faith & Trust IN God + Spirit = Abundance, Prosperous, Increase, Blessed.

We all have a choice. Our actions and giving show our choice. As you grow in your faith and trust in God you grow in your dependence of God. I love how God shows off to us. We have lived by faith for so many years. It is the coolest thing to see God show up and show off to us. Remember my refrigerator story from last Sunday. We were without a refrigerator for over a week. I had an ice chest. Tuesday or Wednesday Pastor Yvonne was out on her prayer walk blessing God and our neighbors. We had just said we trust God and He will supply. No stress or worry anymore. She is walking and at 5:30am there is this woman who is just standing staring at a tree. Yvonne walks up to her and says are you ok. She says yes, and these were her words to Yvonne, “Do you know anyone who needs a refrigerator?” Yvonne brings her over to our place and brings her into our kitchen and shows her the big gap where a refrigerator is supposed to be.

We are generous people. We will taken care of by my God.

“An arrogant and greedy man stirs up strife, But he who trusts in the LORD will be blessed and prosper.” PROVERBS 28:25 AMP

Generosity is about who do you trust. Greed says me, generosity says the Lord. When you grow in God you giving increases and increases and increases but really you are.

Many times we can be like that little boy oops there goes The Lords, next week Jesus after vacation, after this emergency.

Greed and fear are all selfish natural responses. The supernatural is where Amazing Miracles happen. This is the place of Abundance and Increase.

“He who leans on and trusts in and is confident in his riches will fall, But the righteous [who trust in God’s provision] will flourish like a green leaf.” PROVERBS 11:28 AMP

If I get a check that says $2000 my tithe is $200. Generosity and Liberality starts with what i give after i am obedient. I have seen believers who come to God and start growing and giving and then God blesses them and they stop giving and start living again with fear and worry and doubts. Trust God or trust you.

“Then He said to them, “Watch out and guard yourselves against every form of greed; for not even when one has an overflowing abundance does his life consist of nor is it derived from his possessions.”” LUKE 12:15 AMP

“And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.” Luke 12:15 KJV

Life does not consist nor is it derived from your money, wealth, and stuff. Our life consist of God. We increase in order to build and fund His Kingdom.

I remember reading about Mr Penny of JC Penny and Dr. Cromwell of Quaker Oats both made fortunes with the goal to support Gods Agenda and Church. They at the time of their death were tithing over 75% of there income and living on 10-20%. They were very, very wealthy.

They gave to missions, they gave to help the poor, they gave and gave because they were indebted to God.

Generosity is a heart condition. You see it in your finances, you see it in your time, you see it in your compassion and help of those less fortunate. Generous people give because God gave His Best and only Son, Jesus gave His Life a Sacrificial Gift His life for ours.
