We are studying and learning about areas of Proverbs that will cause wisdom and growth in our lives. We looked at wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. The heart, blessings and curses, humility and pride and last week was generosity verses greed.
Today we are going to check out character and attitudes. They are very similar, yet very different. We will look at character and attitudes and see how they shape our lives.
PROVERBS 22:1 “A good name [earned by honorable behavior, godly wisdom, moral courage, and personal integrity] is more desirable than great riches; And favor is better than silver and gold.”
NCV. “Being respected is more important than having great riches. To be well thought of is better than silver or gold.”
NLT. “Choose a good reputation over great riches; being held in high esteem is better than silver or gold.”
A GOOD NAME EARNED BY HONORABLE BEHAVIOR, GODLY WISDOM, MORAL COURAGE, AND PERSONAL INTEGRITY.
I heard it said one day that reputation can take you to the top but only Character will keep you there.
Character is engraved in us. In Us. Character comes from the Greek word “ kharakter” that means “engraved mark.” Character means: the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual. Character(noun) the peculiar quality, or the sum of qualities, by which a person or a thing is distinguished from others; the stamp impressed by nature, education, or habit; that which a person or thing really is; nature; disposition
A character of a person identifies a particular person’s qualities. It refers to the kind of a person you are from the inside. It is the values, ethics and morals you show to others and creates an image for you in somebody’s mind. There are thousands of human beings who have different characters which GOD created for a person. Like, a cheerful character, jolly-good-fellow character, introvert or extrovert character, quiet character, courageous, honest, caring, kind, integrity, etc… which identifies about oneself.
Character is who we are on the inside. Character is the very essence of a particular man. It is indeed what the person is within. Character is identity. Character is what defines you. It’s what people SEE IN YOU. It’s what people will say about you after you walked away. Character is something you hold inside and that people see IN YOU ON THE OUTSIDE OF YOU.
Virtues that build up good character include courage, patience, fortitude, integrity, honesty, loyalty and good habits. Vices that build up bad character include falsehood, avarice, lust, dishonesty, immodesty and the like.
Watch your thoughts they become your words. Watch your words, they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.
Everyone tries to define this thing called Character. It’s not hard. Character is doing what’s right when nobody’s looking.
Character isn’t something you were born with and can’t change, like your fingerprints. It’s something you weren’t born with and must take responsibility for forming. – Jim Rohn
How true Daddy’s words were when he said: all children must look after their own upbringing. Parents can only give good advice or put them on the right paths, but the final forming of a person’s character lies in their own hands. – Anne Frank
Plant a thought and reap a word; Plant a word and reap an action; Plant an action and reap a habit; Plant a habit and reap a Character; Plant a Character and reap a destiny.
Character is the engraved marks inside of us from our education or lack of it, from our homes or lack of it, from life and our environment or lack of it, from our habits or lack of it.
Character is who we become on the inside and this is the person that only you and God really know.
We live in a world and culture that puts no value on character or the teaching of character. This is why our world is full of liars, cheaters, etc who have the character that says do what ever you have to get what You want and do what ever you have to do to satisfy yourself.
Your thoughts become your words. Bibles says guard your thoughts because they will control and rule your lives. Bible says put a guard over your mouth, life and death are in the power of tongue. So your words become your actions. Your actions what you do is consistent with your thoughts, words you speak. What you think and speak is what you do. If you think lack, weak, depressed, sick thoughts, you speak lack, weak, depressed sick word, then your actions are lack, weak, depressed, sick. Your actions become your habit, you do it over and over again now with out even have to think about it. Your habits now engrave within you and this is who you are.
We can never blame things or people for a great life or a sucky life. WE CREATE OUR LIFE, OUR WORLD FROM THE INSIDE OF US. THE INSIDE THEN BECOMES YOUR OUTSIDE. YOUR HAPPINESS, JOY, PEACE, POWER, SELF-CONTROL, ETC.
This is why the scripture that says Guard your heart because that is where your life comes from. The inside to the outside.
ATTITUDE: Means a settled way of thinking or feeling about someone or something, typically one that is reflected in a person’s behavior. Attitude is the way you think or feel about someone or something. It is also the position or posture assumed by the body in connection with an action, feelings, mood, etc.
Attitude can be seen how you act, how you talk how you walk, how you work. Attitude can be heard in your talk, it can be seen in your eyes, do you roll your eyes. Attitude can be seen with how you breath, heavy exhale. Attitude can be seen with a smile or heard with mumbling and grumbling.
Quote: Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude. Our attitude towards life determines life’s attitude towards us.
The greatest discovery of all time is that a person can change his future by merely changing his attitude. Attitude is the most important decision you’ll make today. Zig Ziglar said, “Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude.”
Your attitude is the way you think and feel then you show you on the outside of your life, behavior, actions, the walk and talk.
PHILIPPIANS 2:5 AMP “Have this same attitude in yourselves which was in Christ Jesus [look to Him as your example in selfless humility],” KJV. “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:”
To rein or curb to exercise the mind, to be mentally DISPOSED in a certain direction, the interest of others and obedience.
God is saying let this be your mind. Love, trust, caring, compassion, sacrifice, faithful, serving, giving.
Dispose means to finish with, to get rid of. Self, selfish, greedy, disrespectful, taking, no compassion, etc.
So your attitude becomes your reality. We think, we talk, we behave, habit do it over and over and this is our character, this is our attitude or our reality the way we see it.
Example: the dinner table, mom or dad has cooked. Children sit and meal is served. Meatloaf, mashed potatoes and spinach and Lima beans. One of the children says I don’t like spinach or Lima beans. Mom says just try them, they are good for you. They roll their eyes, they cry, they complain, over and over. Mom says they are good for you, eat them. The child says I can’t that, they will make me sick. He will get sick not because the food is bad but because he believes it to be true. No one else gets sick, no one else cries, but he is stuck in this area.
God has given us all the tools and skills we need to be blessed, successful, over-comers, powerful, achievers.
We do not do the things we are told to do by God. Think on these things, do what you learned, received, and heard and seen, practice these things in daily life.
“Finally, believers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable and worthy of respect, whatever is right and confirmed by God’s word, whatever is pure and wholesome, whatever is lovely and brings peace, whatever is admirable and of good repute; if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think continually on these things [center your mind on them, and implant them in your heart]. The things which you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things [in daily life], and the God [who is the source] of peace and well-being will be with you.” PHILIPPIANS 4:8-9 AMP
What we think, becomes what we say, which becomes what we do, which becomes what we do over and over, which becomes WHO WE ARE, REALLY ARE. WHICH IS OUR REALITY.
