HELPING & SERVING

Sermon Notes

The theme for this month is I LOVE MY CHURCH. THE CHURCH IS NOT JUST US DCI BUT THE CHURCH WORLDWIDE. ITS YOUR NEIGHBORS, CO-WORKERS, FRIENDS AND FAMILY. IT IS EVERYONE.

Helping and serving is our topic today. Helping and serving is a real challenge today. When you see the news and media we rarely see any example of helping and serving. We do see taking, selfishness, and not much in giving, helping.

This was a theme in the life of Christ. He showed us how to live and be and how to treat others. Jesus was servant and helper of many. He left us with so many examples of serving and helping others.
It’s really crazy but we teach our children to to give, to help, to service, to share, to be kind but then look at our examples.

I remind my self daily more is caught than taught. This means my example will have much more impact on their lives than what I say. They see and hear my words and actions.

Helping and serving comes from the heart. It is very difficult to help and serve with a pure heart. Many people do help and serve but not with a pure heart. It’s like look at me, to make my self feel good.

Helping and serving is about GIVING. GIVING OF YOURSELF, YOUR TIME, YOUR TALENTS, YOUR RESOURCES. GIVING STARTS WITH GIVING YOU FIRST TO GOD. THIS IS WHY IT IS REALLY DIFFICULT TO TO GIVE TO OTHERS WITHOUT HAVING AN AGENDA. GIVING IS A HEART JOB AND IT STARTS WITH JESUS.

REMEMBER THE STORY ABOUT THE LITTLE BOY WHO’S MOM GAVE HIM TWO QUARTERS. ONE WAS FOR CHURCH OFFERING AND THE OTHER WAS FOR ICE CREAM AFTER CHURCH. HE WAS TOSSING THE COINS IN THE AIR ON THE WAY TO CHURCH AND HE DROPPED ONE AND IT ROLLED INTO THE GUTTER. THE LITTLE BOY SAYS, “OOPS THERE GOES GOD’S.”

OUT OF THE HEART IS WHAT IS PRODUCED BY OUR ACTIONS AND BEHAVIOR. WE ONLY REALLY DO WHAT IS REALLY IN OUR HEART.
YOU EVER VOLUNTEERED TO HELP OR SERVE BUT YOUR HEART WAS NOT IN IT. YOU COMPLAINED, YOU DID IT HALF HEARTEDLY, YOU WERE FRUSTRATED. IT SHOWS YOUR HEART WAS NOT INTO YOUR SERVICE.

“For you, my brothers, were called to freedom; only do not let your freedom become an opportunity for the sinful nature (worldliness, selfishness), but through love serve and seek the best for one another.”
Galatians 5:13 AMP

CALLED TO FREEDOM: WE WERE SET FREE. WE WERE IN BONDAGE, PRISONS OF SELFISHNESS, JESUS CALLED US TO FREEDOM.

WE HAVE BEEN GIVEN THE GIFT OF FREEDOM. WE ALL HAVE THE FREEDOM TO CHOOSE NOW. BEFORE CHRIST YOU DID NOT KNOW, YOU WERE IN BONDAGE. YOU WERE PRISONERS OF SIN AND CORRUPTION.

JUST LIKE JESUS WHEN HE CALLED LAZRUS FROM DEATH. HE CALLED HIM FROM DEATH TO LIFE. HE SPOKE LAZRUS COME FORTH FROM DEATH INTO LIFE AND HE DID.

YOU WERE CALLED TO FREEDOM. KEY HERE IS RESPONSIBILITY. FREEDOM WITH RESPONSIBILITY. DO NOT LET YOUR FREEDOM BECOME AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE SINFUL NATURE (WORLDLINESS, SELFISHNESS),
FREEDOM, MEANS YOU ARE FREE TO CHOOSE ANY THING YOU LIKE. IT CAN BE GOOD OR BAD, RIGHT OR WRONG. YOU ARE FREE TO CHOOSE.

REMEMBER THE TEACHING ABOUT RAISING YOUR CHILDREN IN THE THINGS OF GOD. WHEN THEY GET OLDER AND IF THEY DEPART THEY WILL COME BACK BASED ON THE KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING THEY HAVE IN THEM.

THIS IS HOW GOD FEELS ABOUT US.

YOU ARE FREE TO CHOOSE, GOD’S HEART IS CHOOSE HIM, HIS WAY OF LIVING, HIS WAY OF LOVING, HIS WAY OF GIVING.

“For the whole Law [concerning human relationships] is fulfilled in one precept, “Y OU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF [that is, you shall have an unselfish concern for others and do things for their benefit].””
Galatians 5:14 AMP

“Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less.” “Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.”

BUT THROUGH LOVE SERVE AND SEEK THE BEST FOR ONE ANOTHER.

“A person’s most useful asset is not a head full of knowledge, but a heart full of love, an ear ready to listen and a hand willing to help others.”

I HAVE FOUND THAT THE OLDER I GET THE MORE SELFLESS I GET. IN MY YOUTH I WAS VERY SELFISH.

GET MARRIED AND THEN HAVE CHILDREN IT’S ALL ABOUT GIVING AND GIVING. GET SAVED AND JESUS COMES IN AND HELPS YOU LOVE AND GIVE AND SERVE.

“make my joy complete by being of the same mind, having the same love [toward one another], knit together in spirit, intent on one purpose [and living a life that reflects your faith and spreads the gospel—the good news regarding salvation through faith in Christ].”
Philippians 2:2 AMP

INTENT ON ONE PURPOSE: LIVING A LIFE THAT REFLECTS YOUR FAITH AND SPREADS THE GOSPEL- THE GOOD NEWS REGARDING SALVATION THROUGH FAITH IN CHRIST.

“Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit [through factional motives, or strife], but with [an attitude of] humility [being neither arrogant nor self-righteous], regard others as more important than yourselves.”
Philippians 2:3 AMP

Factional motives = politics

Attitude of: humility

Regard others as more important than yourselves.

You can not do this really without Gods heart. What is our attitudes like when we are serving, helping? Complaining, whining, quitting, doing a less than excellent job. Threatening to stop or not help or show up.

Your attitudes are a reflection of your heart. We can see what is going on inside of your heart by the way you act, the way you talk, the way carry yourself while serving and helping.

“Do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.”
Philippians 2:4 AMP

THERE IS A MENTALITY IN OUR WORLD AND IT GOES LIKE THIS. WE SEE A NEED AND WE SAY, SOMEONE WILL HELP THEM AND KEEP ON GOING ABOUT OUR BUSINESS.

WE ARE A SPECTATOR CULTURE. WE FILL STADIUMS BY THE THOUSANDS TO WATCH A FEW ACTUAL PLAY THE GAME.

WE WATCH BUT REALLY NEVER GET TO INVOLVED. HELPING AND SERVING WILL COST YOU. JESUS GAVE HIS LIFE SO WE COULD LEARN TO LIVE LIKE HIM.

“Little children (believers, dear ones), let us not love [merely in theory] with word or with tongue [giving lip service to compassion], but in action and in truth [in practice and in sincerity, because practical acts of love are more than words].”
1 John 3:18 AMP

“This is His commandment, that we believe [with personal faith and confident trust] in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and [that we unselfishly] love and seek the best for one another, just as He commanded us.”
1 John 3:23 AMP
