SERMON NOTES

There was a saying we used to say back in the day, “Some people are so spiritually minded that they are no earthly good.” This was a saying that talked about the out of balance of spirituality and practicality. I think the new quote for today is, “A lot of people are so earthly minded that they are not spiritually empty.”

Sometimes when we see things that we think is so far off and what we do is move to far the opposite side of things. This is where things tend to get out of balance.

The other day my tire warning lots came on. All of my tires where some how low and out of balance. The left rear was 27lbs, the right rear was 30 and the two front tires were off two. The proper level was 35. So I got the backs done and the car drove so smooth. The air pressure was balanced so the car drove smooth.

When our lives are not balanced we do not run smooth lives. As a matter of fact we begin to get wear and tear is different areas of our lives.

We are going to look at Natural verses Spirit and Flesh verses Spirit.

God created us as Spirits whom He housed in flesh or human. Our Spirit is from God which makes us Spiritual Beings more than human beings. Human beings are stuck in human. Spiritual Beings are Spirits of God living in human bodies. We are Spiritual Beings. God created us to live Spiritual in this Natural State or Place.

Spirit verses Flesh: which ever one you feed the most becomes stronger. Maybe this is why is so difficult for many to live victorious. Many fail and fall.

ROMANS 8:5 “For those who are living according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh [which gratify the body], but those who are living according to the Spirit, [set their minds on] the things of the Spirit [His will and purpose].”

Listen to the descriptions: those who live according to the flesh. To live according means to live following,

“People whose lives are based on selfishness think about selfish things, but people whose lives are based on the Spirit think about things that are related to the Spirit.”
Romans 8:5 CEB

Many when they read this we think this can not be talking about me. It’s when you and your mind and thoughts are really just about you and your wants and desires. The flesh is really about pleasing self over pleasing God.

Keeping Our Spiritual Balance

Life is a little like walking a tight-rope. Our success will depend a lot upon whether or not we maintain a proper balance. The two things we must keep in balance are the natural and the spiritual. Both are vitally important to us.

God says forgive and we choose to anger, resentment, right them off, who needs them, bitterness. This is flesh and selfish. Forgiveness is more for you than anyone else. Be careful when you adopt an attitude of I don’t need anyone in my life. That is so flesh and selfish. We think of flesh as people who cheat on spouses or involved in some horrid sin.

Flesh can be jealous, flesh can be lier, flesh can be bitter, flesh can be selfish, flesh can be greedy, flesh can be no compassion, flesh can be very religious.

What ever guides you flesh or spirit you SET YOUR MIND ON THE THINGS OF FLESH OR SPIRIT.

Remember someone saying, “they set thier minds to loose weight or build a business.” What were they saying. This is focused mindset. When we go God then get upset go Self over and over this which ever side we yield to becomes the true leader and guide in our lives.

“For such a person ought not to think or expect that he will receive anything [at all] from the Lord, being a double-minded man, unstable and restless in all his ways [in everything he thinks, feels, or decides].”
JAMES 1:7-8 AMP

Listen this is where many believers live everyday. They struggle over and over get up and fall down. Got joy then got misery. Got prosperity then got poverty. Got love then we got hate. Got trust in God, oops got trust in me again. Up and down up and down its a terrible cycle that does not bless you. God can not bless this mindset. Unstable in all his ways, in everything he thinks, feels, and decides.

“Those who think they can do it on their own end up obsessed with measuring their own moral muscle but never get around to exercising it in real life. Those who trust God’s action in them find that God’s Spirit is in them—living and breathing God! Obsession with self in these matters is a dead end; attention to God leads us out into the open, into a spacious, free life. Focusing on the self is the opposite of focusing on God. Anyone completely absorbed in self ignores God, ends up thinking more about self than God. That person ignores who God is and what he is doing. And God isn’t pleased at being ignored.”
Romans 8:5-8 MSG

The battle or challenge is who will you allow to lead in your life. You or Spirit of God.

Most of our lives have been lived in flesh or the natural state. Self has been our God and still battles us to lead and guide our lives even today.

Romans 8:5b “but those who are living according to the Spirit, [set their minds on] the things of the Spirit [His will and purpose]. Set their minds on the things of the Spirit, (HIS WILL AND PURPOSE).”

WHAT DOES HE WANT YOU DO? WHAT DOES HE WANT FOR YOU? WHAT DOES HE WANT YOU TO GIVE? WHAT DOES HE WANT YOU TO CHANGE? WHAT DOES HE WANT FOR YOUR LIFE?

MANY PEOPLE PURSUE PURPOSE BUT IS IT HIS PURPOSE OR IS IT JUST ANOTHER PURPOSE FOR SELF.

SPIRIT SAYS HIS WILL HIS PURPOSE. His Will:

Now the mind of the flesh is death [both now and forever—because it pursues sin]; but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace [the spiritual well-being that comes from walking with God— both now and forever];”
ROMANS 8:5-6 AMP

Spirit is Life and Peace

“But I say, walk habitually in the [Holy] Spirit [seek Him and be responsive to His guidance], and then you will certainly not carry out the desire of the sinful nature [which responds impulsively without regard for God and His precepts].”
GALATIANS 5:16 AMP

“But the fruit of the Spirit [the result of His presence within us] is love [unselfish concern for others], joy, [inner] peace, patience [not the ability to wait, but how we act while waiting], kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such things there is no law.”
GALATIANS 5:22-23 AMP
